Greetings from Afyonkarahisar, where the roads meet!
The Faculty of Law at Afyon Kocatepe University is one of Turkey’s youngest and most dynamic law schools. Established by the Council of Ministers on June 21, 2010, the faculty officially commenced its activities with the appointment of its founding dean on February 9, 2012. Construction of the Faculty of Law building, which began in 2011, was undertaken by the Borusan Kocabıyık Foundation. By April 2012, furnishing and landscaping had been completed, and the building was ready for use.
The faculty, which will graduate its first cohort of students in 2018, offers a warm and supportive learning environment through its highly qualified academic staff and well-equipped assistant lecturers. What sets the faculty apart is its personalized student-professor interaction and the high-quality legal education it provides to a select group of students. With its collegial atmosphere, AKU Faculty of Law strives to be an exemplary institution where students’ concerns are addressed in a familial setting and where academic excellence is a top priority.
Despite its young age, AKU Law has organized eleven postgraduate seminars since its establishment. It has also successfully hosted Turkey’s first-ever Mining Law Symposium, as well as the Mecelle Symposium. The Symposium on Current Issues in Private Law and Its Practice was held for the second time in 2017 with broad participation, and plans are underway to elevate it to an international level in the coming years.
The Faculty of Law is located on Afyon Kocatepe University’s ANS Campus. In addition to its modern education building—constructed by Borusan Holding and featuring a courtroom, a reading room, and a conference hall—the Central Library offers students access to an extensive collection of legal resources, significantly enriched over the past five years. Moreover, online database subscriptions, such as HeinOnline, allow students to access English-language legal materials remotely using their university email accounts.
Across from the Faculty of Law lies the Erenler area, a vibrant student hub offering a wide range of accommodation options, along with numerous social and entertainment venues where students can enjoy their free time. Both private and public dormitories are available on and around the campus, making accommodation easily accessible in Afyon.
Afyonkarahisar, known as a crossroads city, offers convenient transportation options. From the Afyonkarahisar Bus Terminal, buses are available to every city in Turkey and even to some international destinations. Antalya, a popular holiday resort, is just a 3-hour bus ride away; the Davraz Ski Center and Isparta are 2 hours away; Ankara is 3 hours; İzmir is 4.5 hours; and Eskişehir is 1.5 hours away. With Zafer Airport nearby, Istanbul is only a 1-hour flight away. Transportation is not an issue in Afyon. Additionally, Afyon is a renowned center for thermal tourism, boasting some of Turkey’s richest offerings in hotels, swimming pools, and spas. The city also hosts three major shopping malls: Park Afyon, Afium, and Özdilek.
The Faculty of Law at Afyon Kocatepe University is committed to providing students with a comparative perspective and strong legal reasoning skills, thanks to its dedicated academic staff. In addition to traditional law courses, the curriculum includes many subjects designed to broaden students’ comparative outlook and enhance their analytical abilities.
Since the faculty is relatively young, courses that lack specialized lecturers are supported by distinguished faculty members from Anadolu University and Necmettin Erbakan University. In particular, Anadolu University provides extensive academic support. In this collaboration, a Joint Thesis-Based Master’s Program in Private Law, established between Afyon Kocatepe University and Anadolu University, has been successfully admitting students for the past two years.
